About Our Director and Founder

Artist and poet Sheila Lanham formed U.S. Poets in Mexico in 2008.  Sheila's first visits to Mexico began in 1978 with a visit to Zihuatanejo accompanying artist Larry Rivers.  She attended The School of Visual Arts and The New School for Social Research in NYC and The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD majoring in Painting.  In the early 1980's, she was co-editor with poet David Beaudouin for a few years of The Pearl: A Baltimore Literary Journal.  She is the author of Baltimore: Blues and Greens, a chapbook) and is included in A Gathering of Voices: An Anthology of Baltimore Poets (Dolphin Moon Press).  She previously worked as an archivist for contemporary artists, including French artist Arman, Dutch artist Karel Appel and many others.  Sheila also organized the personal archives of poet Kenneth Koch.  She currently resides in New York City.  USPiM was formed out of a love of poetry, a love of Mexico, a desire to know more about Mexican poetry and to share that knowledge.
