About Uxmal
Uxmal (Óoxmáal in Maya language, and pronounced "oosh-mahl"), 80 miles from Merida, is rated by many archaeologists as one of the finest ancient Maya cities. Uxmal was a major sacred ceremonial site along the Puuc Route. The whole city layout was aligned with the planets and Venus was predominant in this plan. The "Nunnery" (named by the Spaniards) was actually a school for healers, atronomers, shamans, priests and mathematicians. Uxmal flourished in the Late-Classic period (600-900 A.D.).
In 1996, UNESCO declarred Uxmal a World Cultural Heritage site.
